Wild Wednesday: Alien Invaders

Learn about the natural world around us with Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center’s Wild Wednesdays program, presented each week by Shangri La’s summer scholars.

On Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at 9 a.m., Shangri La will present Alien Invaders, a class aimed to educate guests about invasive plants in southeast Texas. Participants will learn to identify invasive plants and remove those found inside Shangri La.

To reserve a spot in this class, call 409.670.0803. The activity is free to members and included in the general admission fee for non-members. Participants must be over four years of age. Guests should meet at the admissions office at 9 a.m.

On Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at 9 a.m., Shangri La will present Web World: Spiders. Participants will learn why spiders are important and which ones are poisonous. Guests will also learn fun facts about spiders and observe the fascinating geometry of webs.

Wild Wednesday: LEEDing to a Green Future

Learn about the natural world around us with Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center’s Wild Wednesdays program, presented each week by Shangri La’s summer scholars.

On Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at 9 a.m., Shangri La will present LEEDing to a Green Future. Guests will learn about the tools and techniques used to help Shangri La become the first project in Texas and the 50th project in the world to earn the U.S. Green Building Council’s platinum LEED®-NC certification. This prestigious honor verifies the design and construction of Shangri La reached the highest green building and performance measures. Participants will also learn tips to live a greener life.

On Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at 9 a.m., Shangri La will present Friend or Foe – Snake ID. Participants will stare eye-to-eye with some of the snakes of Southeast Texas and learn to properly identify them, helping guests determine which snakes are friends and which snakes are not.

On Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at 9 a.m., Shangri La will present History of Shangri La and Garden Walk. Participants will enjoy a guided tour of Shangri La’s beautiful gardens while learning about the facility’s fascinating history. Guests will also learn about the individual gardens and how they relate to the original Shangri La developed by H.J. Lutcher Stark more than 60 years ago.

Wild Wednesday: Sensory Walk

Learn about the natural world around us with Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center’s Wild Wednesdays program, presented each week by Shangri La’s summer scholars.

On Wednesday, August 13, 2008, at 9 a.m., Shangri La will present Sensory Walk, a silent walk that encourages visitors to use each of their senses to experience the world around them. At the end of the walk, visitors will discuss their experience and how the silence impacted it.
