Sea Surface Temperature Maps

Meteorologist Bryan Rupp

Sea surface temperatures of at least eighty degrees are a necessary ingredient in producing tropical cyclones.

For the 2009 season the Gulf of Mexico sea surface temperatures went above 80 degrees around May 10.

As we saw in the 2005 and 2008 seasons, water temperatures above ninety degrees super charge hurricanes and since they get their energy from warm water temperatures, the warmer, the stronger storms can become.
