Ashly Elam

NEW YORK (AP) - The Charlotte Bobcats have gone for backcourt
help with the ninth pick in tonight's NBA draft, taking D.J.
Augustin (AW'-gus-teen) of Texas.
Augustin was a highly-decorated player for Texas last season,
earning consensus First Team All-America honors and receiving the
Cousy Award as the nation's top point guard. He also was a finalist
for the Wooden and Naismith Awards before leading the Longhorns
into the NCAA regional finals.
Augustin paced the Big 12 with 5.8 assists and was second in the
conference with a 19.2 scoring average. He scored at least 20
points in 19 games and reached double digits in assists four times.
The 6-footer also paced the conference and was ranked fourth
national with 6.7 assists a game as a freshman while averaging 14.4
points. He is fifth in school history with 452 assists, fourth with
a .402 three-point shooting percentage and 18th with 1,234 points
despite just two seasons with the Longhorns.
Augustin is a gifted athlete who shows smarts on the court. He
has a great first step and will take the ball to the basket.
Augustin also was smart off the court, earning First Team Academic
All-American honors last season.
