NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Yankees have won the World Series, beating the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 behind Hideki Matsui's record-tying six RBIs.

Andy Pettitte won the clincher Wednesday night, pitching the
Yankees to their elusive 27th championship and first since 2000.

Matsui homered, doubled and singled, and tied Bobby Richardson's
49-year-old record for RBIs in a Series game. His two-run homer off
Pedro Martinez in the second inning started the Yankees on their
way.

Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez helped the
Yankees wrap up a most successful season in their first year at the
new $1.5 billion Yankee Stadium.

Matsui MVP after record-tying 6-RBI night

NEW YORK (AP) - Designated hitter Hideki Matsui was named Most Valuable Player of the World Seriesafter his six RBI night that tied a 49-year-old Series record in the New York Yankees' clinching Game 6 victory over Philadelphia.

Matsui got the Yanks off to a fast start with a two-run homer
off 38-year-old Pedro Martinez in the second inning. Matsui has hit
three home runs in this World Series, two against Martinez. He had
run-scoring hits his first three times at-bat.

Matsui added a two-out single to center with the bases loaded.
Matsui added a two-run double in the fifth inning.

Through an interpreter, Matsui called his night "unbelievable"
and said he even surprised himself.

For the Series, Matsui was 8-for-13 with three homers and eight
RBIs to help the Yankees to their 27th World Series title, but
first since 2000.

Teammate Mark Teixeira said of Matsui's
performance: "You can't say enough about the guy. I've never seen
anybody hit like that in a World Series."
