Deadly Crash Investigation Prompts New Guidelines for Bus Tires

Bryan Rupp

Federal Transportation Officials are now recommending that bus drivers take new steps to check tire pressure after reviewing a deadly bus crash that occurred last year.

The National Transportation Safety Board determined that a punctured tire caused the bus crash that killed 17 members of Houston's Vietnamese Catholic Community in August 2008.

The finding was adopted by the three-member board after hearing from investigators yesterday during a meeting in Washington.

The accident happened when a charter bus carrying 55 passengers to a retreat in Missouri plunged over a highway bridge in Sherman, about 60 miles north of Dallas.

The board also criticized federal and state agencies for lax oversight of the motorcoach industry.
