EL PASO, Texas (AP) - More than 2,100 diabetic patients treated at William Beaumont Army Medical Center are at risk for hepatitis or HIV because of potentially flawed insulin injections.

The El Paso medical center said Thursday that although each needle was new and sterilized, the pen portion of multi-dose injectors may have been used on more than one person.

The mistake was discovered last week after 18 months of incorrect use. Officials said those who received insulin injections between August 2007 and January 2009 may be at risk for developing blood-borne diseases.

William Beaumont spokesman Clarence Davis III said the mistake is under investigation. He said the process of notifying at-risk patients is under way, and that an Army-wide review of the insulin devices has been ordered.
