BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - An American fugitive wanted in the United States for allegedly raping four girls and videotaping the sex acts was arrested Thursday, January 8, 2009 in Thailand.
Thai police say 41-year-old Darren Ray Castleberry of Spring, Texas, was arrested in a central Bangkok shop. Police believe Castleberry has been living in Thailand since 2006.
He'd been the subject of a global manhunt since Interpol issued an arrest warrant for him. The Nation newspaper in Bangkok reports he's detained at the Thai Immigration Bureau pending extradition to the United States.
Castleberry has been charged with four counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Department.
Several Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, are popular with sex offenders due to lax law enforcement, corruption in the justice system and poverty that forces children into prostitution.
