CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - State officials investigating a suicide attempt in one of the holding cells at the Nueces County Courthouse no longer wants prisoners held in the cells.
Instead, the head of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, Adan Munoz, says prisoners now will be shuttled from the jail to the courthouse until the jail is in compliance.
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported today in its online edition that an inspector with the agency toured cells at the courthouse and found several problems.
The cells were too small, didn't have proper locks or floor drains and had other deficiencies.
Sheriff's deputies currently bring prisoners from the jail to the courthouse where bailiffs hold prisoners in the cells while they wait for hearings or wait to be taken back to the jail.
The county is waiting for a formal order from the agency and has 30 days to respond with a plan of action.
