Texas man ordered to pay FEMA for false hurricane claim

DALLAS (AP) - A Dallas man has been sentenced to two years probation and must pay back $23,402 after he falsified documents to
receive Hurricane Katrina assistance.

U.S. Attorney Richard B. Roper of the Northern District of Texas says 45-year-old Bernard Thomas submitted a false claim about where he lived in order to receive disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in September 2005.

Officials say he pleaded guilty in March to making the fraudulent claim.

U.S. District Judge Reed C. O'Connor sentenced Thomas, who claimed damages for a New Orleans, La., residence that was not his.
