Cash, guns, scales and cocaine, all seized Monday night from a Beaumont Independent School District substitute teacher's apartment in the 2000 block of Dowlen Road.
"It's obvious (that) he's been making crack cocaine," said Sgt. Erik Kvarme who is with the Beaumont Police Department Narcotics Unit. " We got a tip and have been investigating this teacher for the last couple of months. We believe he is part of a cocaine operation."
Drug Enforcement Administration agents arrested 38-year-old Clayton Allen after receiving tips that the teacher was involved with drugs.
Investigators believe the eight ounces of cocaine found on Allen would have been converted into crack worth more than $20,000.
"It's obvious he's been doing this for quite some time now,"added Kvarme.
Allen posted a $24,000 bond and bonded out of the Jefferson County Jail.
BISD says Allen did not sell or possess drugs on campus.
Still, Tuesday, there was plenty of chatter among BISD parents at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Middle School.
Parents were stunned to hear that a former substitute is now facing felony drug charges for the delivery and possession of a controlled substance.
"I'm glad they caught him," said BISD parent Lionel Heath. "I don't like the idea that he is around kids. Cocaine is dangerous."
BISD says Allen had only been working for BISD since September, but say he did a good job during his short tenure.
12 News has learned that Allen had a prior DWI conviction- a misdemeanor-something the district does not search for in pre- employment screening.
"They have to go through finger printing and background checks," said BISD spokeswoman Jessie Haynes. "We look for felonies."
The district immediately removed Allen's name from the substitute teacher's list, but if he is not convicted,he could re- apply as a substitute.

A Beaumont Independent School District substitute teacher is in jail facing arraignment this morning on multiple drug charges.
At around 7:30p.m. Monday, November 2, the Beaumont Police Department Narcotics Unit with the assistance of the Drug Enforcement Agency, executed a search warrant for delivery of a controlled substance. They arrested Clayton Allen in his apartment located in the 2000 block of Dowlen Road.
Officials say Allen also has prior DUI convictions from Houston where he plead guilty.

Everyone deserves a 2nd chance. Who knows what the real circumstances of the situation are. Maybe it was a set-up. A plant. Or maybe it was all legit. No matter what, no one was killed and no kids were ever involved, according to the reports. Remember, this is AMERICA, and we are all presumed INNOCENT until PROVEN guilty. I'm sure you'd like the same assumption if you were ever in a bind, so please do the same for Mr. Allen.

You are Clayton Allen no matter what the people say or do you are Clayton Allen. This choice you made is a result of human error not a result of failure. It's what you learn from this incident and apply to you daily life that will make this all be for some reason. Remember God only touches the ones that he knows can get a reaction like this from people!! Love Always T.T.

HE WAS NOT AT THE SCHOOL FOR THE PAY... HE WAS THERE BECAUSE HE LOVES TO HELP PEOPLE. HE WAS THERE BECAUSE HE CARED SO MUCH FOR THE KIDS. YES HE IS VERY EMBARRASED AND FEELS LIKE HE LET THEM DOWN. BUT HE FEELS LIKE THAT GOD ALLOWED THIS TO HAPPEN TO HIM FOR A REASON... SO THAT HE CAN BE AN EXAMPLE AND A WITNESS TO THE KIDS AND LET THEM KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE THAT SELLING DRUGS IS NOT THE WAY TO GO. IT SEEMS LIKE TODAY KIDS DONT LISTEN TO SOMEONE TRYING TO GRILL THEM ABOUT SOMETHING THAT THEY HAVE

YES HE WAS WAS WRONG AND HE HAS ADMITTED THAT HE WAS WRONG AND WISH THAT HE WOULD HAVE NEVER GOTTEN INTO THAT LIFESTYLE. NO SIN IS GREATER THAN THE OTHER, SO WHO ARE WE TO JUDGE HIM. WE ALL HAVE DONE SOME THINGS THAT WE KNOW WERE NOT RIGHT BUT WE JUST DID NOT GET CAUGHT. EVERY ONE IS SAYING "HOW COULD THEY LET HIM BE AROUND OUR KIDS?" WELL MAYBE YOU ALL NEED TO STOP AND ASK ALL THE KIDS LIVES THAT HE HAS TOUCHED. ASK THEM ABOUT HOW HE WAS SACRIFICE AND GIVE UP ANYTHING TO HELP THEM OUT. TRUST ME

Let yea without sin cast the first stone. Don't just show the one selling it bring the one he sold it too. I believe every knee must bow and every one shall confess. Let us pray for him that God shows his mercy. For we all need that for our own sins. Open up your closet and let someone see that there is still meat on your skeleton's bones. Where are he christians that knows the same God that created us created Mr. Allen. God never makes a mistake but we sin daily yet he loves us.

I am speechless!! Just know that you are not alone as a childhiood friend/classmate/parent. We all make mistakes, it's how we correct our mistakes that defines our character. If you want to teach the students that you were involved with at B.I.S.D anything teach them that when you become an adult be careful with the choices you make because, you and only you will have to really suffer the consequenses.

This may be alarming, but most schools do not drug test. Many people I went to school with did drugs and still do drugs as teachers. There is not a requirment to pass a drug screen to be a teacher in Texas.

I honesty think they should do random drug test on every school. There should not be drug users teaching kids. We are supposed to send our kids to school and think they are safe. This is not safe and to all BISD parents I would highly reccomend looking in to home school for you children. Schools lose money every day your kid isnt there and thats all they are worried about it the money. Schools ask you for money to pay for this and that but why cant they use the money for drug test?

I worked with a girl at the hospital who was fired because she could not past a drug test. Imagine my surprise when I went to school and saw her substitute teaching. I alerted the principal of this and was told she would be taken off the list. They were right she now is a permanent aid in the lifeskills class. BISD doesn't seem to be very concerned about drug use in there staff!

More pathetic issues concerning BISD. When are the voters of Beaumont going to wake up and recall the entire BISDboard and give Thomas the swift kick out of here?

This school district is an absolute joke. Has anyone ever heard of background check. No telling who BISD has allowed to sit in our classrooms with our children. They clearly don't care as long as a position is filled. Prime example are these bus drivers I see driving with cell phones to their ears and speeding on the city streets.

Mike...as a teacher you are looked at by some kids as a role model...Letting that teacher act like a child, is teaching that child what?...If you have to do drugs or get DWIs you should not be a teacher..You say it is his choice what he does on his off time, he chose to do enought to get caught....
Tuesday, Nov 3 at 11:08 AM mike wrote ...
who cares if a teacher gets high on his off- time? Or for that matter, anyone getting high on their off-time? What difference does it make? Alcohol is legal and its far more problematic: drunk drivers kill millions each year. this news site always has a story about a drunk driver. Lets make alcohol illegal and see how deaths plummet!
