The City of Beaumont Ad Hoc Recycling Commitee met Monday afternoon to discuss the possibilities of bringing a recycling program to the city. One of the options discussed could cost participants up to twelve dollars a month - for a once monthly pick-up plan. The committee discussed a number of options as well, including the idea of a pay-for-acess drop-off center. 12 News Reporter Liz McKernan has the story.
Jennifer Yeary comes once a month from Kountze to drop off her recyclables at the free collection site on 4th Street and Cedar.
"I re-use things at home all the time, and just like to do my part" said Yeary.
She's not too sure that with a free drop off - she'd pay to recycle.
"Well since this one is free it would be hard for me to pay for something like that" said Yeary.
"We've just got to find a way that is cost effective not only for the city, but for our citizens" said City of Beaumont Mayor Becky Ames.
Monday afternoon the Beaumont Ad Hoc Recycling Committee heard a proposal from RecycleBank that would require at least six thousand participants at a price of eight to twelve dollars a month for a once-a-month pick up.
"It was very dissapointing. Based on the presentation that had been made a month ago - I think we were all far more hopeful of something that was going to be affordable" said committee member Elizabeth Petit.
The next step for the committee will be putting together a survey that would ask the community whether a pay-to-recycle program could be an option they'd be interested in.
"What the committee will have to do is come up with the best scenario that we think will be the best for the city and its citizens, and have those details when we do send out a survey" said Mayor Ames.
"Right now we're trying to find what is best financially for the constituents of the city that works for a range of the community - but eventually I hope we have recycling for the entire community" said committee member Rob Clark.
The idea of a recycling community - sits well with Yeary.
"I just feel like God's given us this earth and we need to try and keep it cleaned up as much as possible" said Yeary.
The committee has not made any concrete decisions yet on what to move forward with - but plans on meeting with the city's waste management team for additional ideas and options.

Since so many people could careless about our planet, maybe we should have a subscription type pick-up by a private company. i would live to participate.

I feel the average citizen SHOULD be paid $12 a month to recycle than the ideal of nickel and diming the participants to recycle. Otherwise, its much better to throw the trash in the trash bin provided by the government. Look at your current water bill-do you see a litter removal fee? The city is nickel and diming the citizen. The garbage collection fee is OK. We do not need a city-wide recylcling program Jennifer Yeary. You are from Kountze-not Beaumont!!!!
