Church to Burn Bibles on Halloween Night

Bryan Rupp, 12 News

A North Carolina Church has stirred controversy with plans for a Halloween book burning.

The pastor wants to use Bibles, music, and books to fuel the fire which are things he calls perversions of God's word.

Reporter Frank Fraboni has more which can be seen by clicking the video box directly or by clicking the "WATCH THE VIDEO" link.

The Bible clearly says that if a preacher leads Gods sheep astray their blood is on the preachers head. God help that man when he meets God at his Judgement day. The Bible also says that we should search the Scripture to be approved, so if some of those people that go to that church should do their homework.

First of all the bible was not written in latin or english as an original language. The KJV has many translation mistakes from the original language. The KJV tells us that the sabbath is on Saturday, so why does this pastor ignore that and go against GOD'S word? He also practices the Good Friday nonsense that the church of Rome started about 460 years ago and by doing that he ignores the words in the bible that say Jesus was in the ground for 3 full days and nights, just like Noah. Shame on him.

Two, where do you get off insulting morons (people of mild mental retardation having a mental age of from 7 to 12 years) by calling this guy one? As for the message he's sending, it's pretty clear that he doesn't consider any Bible other than the KJV the word of God.

Atheists like me don't have to work that hard to poke holes in your supposed "unity under God" if you condemn your own as "heretics". Though I find religion stupid, I cannot advocate the burning of ANY books. Burning books spreads ignorance. Ignorance is something this country does not need any more of.

Carekat wrote: "Is he CRAZY, what kind of message is that sending to is parishioners?" The message he's sending is that the KJV is the only real Bible and that all other translations are, like Halloween, of the Devil. KJV-only believers have this misguided notion that only the King James Version of the Bible is the word of God.

The English of the KJV is very different from modern English and if one is not familiar with 17th century English it can be hard to understand. Protestants generally believe that the Bible is inerrant in the original autographs, not the English translations.

Anonymous wrote: "The KJV of the Bible IS the only authorized version of the bible." Ah, yes, another example of KJV-onlyism. Let's set aside the fact that the guy whose New Testament Greek manuscript was used (Erasmus) was a humanist who relied heavily on Jerome's Latin Vulgate. Since even the manuscripts from which the KJV was translated (the textus receptus) were not the original autographs, what evidence is there that the KJV is "closest to the original"?

Does Brother Grizzard’s copy of the KJV Bible includes the original 1611 preface from the translators to THE READER and not (as many centuries of ill-preserved, uninspired, errant and fallible ‘so-called’ KJV Bibles do) just the preface addressed to their earthly king. Surely Grizzard’s personal copy of the KJV Bible includes this preface TO THE READER. He has indeed READ IT and insisted all members of his congregation READ IT. Otherwise he's going straight to hell by his own definition, right?

Hey, whether you are someone from this church reading this or someone just reading my random comments, the only INSPIRED version of the Bible are the original manuscripts. The original Hebrew/Aramaic/Greek writings. The KJV was just the first English translation, which lost a lot of the original meaning. This pastor is misunderstanding this, and in turn burning what he claims "heretical" which, in reality, is better translated from Greek to English and so on.

Friday, Oct 16 at 11:51 PM superfoge wrote ...

The Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew and the New Testament was written in Greek. Later the OT was translated into Greek as well (known as the Septuagint). The KJV of the Bible is not infallible but the work of translators working with a limited knowledge of the original languages, knowledge that has been expanded as archeology has continued to uncover both biblical and extra-biblical manuscripts that have strengthened our ability to understand the original languages and cultures.

According to the pastor, "I believe the KJV for the English speaking people is God´s Holy Word." This reminds me of the quotation attributed to ¨Ma¨ Ferguson, the first female governor of Texas: “If the King’s English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it’s good enough for the children of Texas!”

The King James Bible was first published in 1611, and thus can hardly be considered "God's preserved, inspired, inerrant and infallible word of God", considering how many millennia after the fact it was cobbled together. This church is a danger to other branches of Christianity, such as Catholicism, and to freedom, in general.
