Lamar Expects Big Numbers From Post 9/11 GI Bill

News KBMT

For Josh Wright and Collin Callier playing ping pong is the perfect way to relax after a hectic day of school.
Their school will be completely paid for this August thanks to the post 9/11 GI Bill. The bill will take care of tuition, books and rent.

"Small reward for what you've done,"said Josh Wright who plans to use the bill this weekend.

Best friends since they were little kids the two served in the Navy. Josh was stationed in Virginia and Collin in California. Located on opposite coasts the two reunited in the middle-Texas-to pursue a degree at Lamar University.

"The last one gave you just lump sum every month and out of that you had school, tuition and fees,"said Callier.

Under the original bill, Callier and Wright say they were forced to pick up a job because the old bill did not provide enough funds to get through school.

Norma Cumbaa says there are strong numbers walking into the veterans affairs office looking to take advantage of the bill. The university expects to see a large increase by the beginning of fall semester.

"During the spring we had over 200 student using the old bill," said Cumbaa. "We look for the numbers to increase."
