Federal health officials say at least 12 people have been hospitalized in connection with a possible E.coli outbreak in beef and two of them suffered kidney failure.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 23 people in nine states may have become ill after eating beef produced by JBS Swift Beef Co. of Greeley, Colo.

The company recalled about 380,000 pounds of beef this week after some illnesses were reported and a government investigation showed a possible connection to the company's product. That recall expanded a June 24, 2009 recall of just over 41,000 pounds.

The CDC says health officials in several states investigating the strain of E. coli found that most ill persons had consumed ground beef, and many reported that it was undercooked.

For all of you vegans out there...what about the spinach recalls that got so many people sick? At least with beef it can be cooked to a safe temperature.

The whole truth of the matter is that none of it is necessary. Billions of people already thrive on a plant based diet. Just because we've done something in the passed does not mean we must continue, if it's an unsafe practice. No... no one should care what I think - however, I do encourage everyone to do their own thinking and investigating into whether or not our current system of meat production is "safe or humane". Neither is the case.Yes, we've consumed meat since the beginning of time- however, never before has there been 6.8 billion people on the planet.Never before has there been such a rapid and careless an "assembly line" - "processing" millions of animals per hour. "Speed kills" in the most brutal fashion.

Who cares what bea.elliott thinks? You take a chance when you get on the highway. You take a chance on everything that you do. We have consumed meat since the beginning of time. It's the producers that need to be cracked down on.

Actually... how many times does there have to be an illness caused by consuming meat... or growing animals to convince people a plant based diet is healthier for all? Glad to be vegan -

How many times does this company have recalls before the govement actually does something. The USDA is always on site but this still happens. This is saying that the system is broken,
