David Ingram

LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - A motorist who struck a man in a motorized wheelchair has been indicted on vehicular homicide charges.

Calcasieu Parish grand jurors recently returned the indictment against 43-year-old Ellis Thomas Charles.

Police say Charles allegedly struck from behind and killed 54-year-old Gary Wayne Charles, who was traveling down a Lake Charles street in a motorized wheelchair. The defendant and the victim are not related.

Gary Charles, who was ejected from his wheelchair, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died of a head injury he had suffered.
