Autopsy: Brother-in-law to NBA Star Stephen Jackson Died of Smoke Inhallation

A Jefferson County Justice of the Peace tells KBMT12 News that preliminary autopsy results show the brother-in-law of an NBA star died of smoke inhalation.

Jefferson County Justice of the Peace Tom Gillam says 32-year-old Kevin Chaney was found dead inside the garage of his home at 3200 Woodlawn in Groves after firefighters finished putting flames out early Monday morning. Chaney's wife and kids were asleep in the house at the time of the fire and were able to escape unharmed.

Chaney is married to the sister of NBA star Stephen Jackson of the Golden State Warriors.

Gillam says damage to the home was mostly confined to the garage, but Groves Fire Chief Dale Jackson says there is no official word and what caused the fire.

Neighbors tell KBMT that Chaney was trapped in the car that was parked in the garage at the time of the fire.

Gillam has ordered toxicology tests to finalize his findings.
