Port Arthur Man Who Fathered 7 Kids with 6 Different Mothers Jailed For Failing to Provide Child Support

A domestic case that involves tens of thousands of dollars in delinquent child support and multiple female partners came to a head on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 as a Jefferson County District Judge ordered a Port Arthur man to jail for failing to pay up.

KBMT 12 News ABC/NBC's Michael Seiden has the story.

From wanted posters to the courtroom unpaid child support is a serious problem in the state of Texas.

"We have a whole division in state attorney's office that does nothing but collect back child support it's an incredible problem" said criminal justice attorney Ed Shettle.

A problem that Calvin Brooks ran into at the 317th District Court in Jefferson County.

Judge Larry Thorne sentenced Brooks to six months in jail after he failed to pay more than $34,000 in unpaid child support.

But that's just the beginning.

"He also has six other children and through sworn testimony that can be verified through court he has five other support cases" said Shettle.

Glen Crocker represented Brooks and he said his client will be required to pay back every dollar following his release.

"He will still owe every dollar when he gets out" added Shettle.

The Jefferson D.A. doesn't keep records on how many cases are seen per yearfor unpaid child support. But there is no question about this a crime that is on the rise.

In Beaumont Micheal Seiden KBMT 12 News ABC/NBC.

Meanwhile, the Texas attorney general's office said the following two people are on the most wanted list for being child support evaders owing a combined $200,000.

It would be wise if state and jails put him to work. Image all the jobs, with in reason to those in prison, put him to work in jail to pay his bill towards his children and the state while he served his time. Sound better then rotten and doing nothing.

Some of these comments make me sick to my stomach. It is very easy to sit there and judge as you have not encountered some of the problems most have. I really wonder why it is common for "some folk" to have these type of circumstances. I guess we don't want to go into slavery or better yet racist america. All of you who are financially stable I pray to God your status never changes. We deal with out issues why some choose to commit suicide to escape their problems.

Let's see. I have one child, who was planned. One husband, father of said child. Married now, and before he was born. We both work. Child makes good grades and is not a troublemaker or smart mouth. We have a house, two cars, bills get paid, no welfare/foodstamps/AFDC/medicare. And honestly, it is not that freaking hard! Why is it that the rest of this trash can't do the same thing? Total disgusting failures.

Birth control?? Don’t you people realize that the women in question get more money from the government for each additional child they have. There is no incentive to have fewer children! CBS news profiled a lady last night, a new mother, who had just lost her job and was going on welfare. No mention of the father. The US has spent over 10 trillion dollars trying to eliminate poverty and all that has occurred is several generations of people sucking more and more money from the system.

what good is it really gonna do for him to be in jail? hes still not gonna pay his child support! how is he gonna do it in prison? you honestly think he cares about whether or not hes in there? if he cared hed pay his child support and none of this would be going on! grow up calvin! have the state pay for you to NOT have any more kids that way we dont have to pay for your child support!

This is probably more common than you think. One lady that works in a cafeteria in a local high school has 5 children and none of them have the same daddy. Her sister has 4 children and none of them have the same daddy. Seems to be the norm for a certain type of folk.

The more I think about this, the angrier I get. Not only am I paying for his children (welfare), I am now paying his upkeep in prison!!!!!!!!! When are we going to stop this madness of paying people who do not contribute to society and are not grateful for what the government (taxpayers) gives them. They say it’s owed to them for things that occurred years ago. I work – they should work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is anyone listening. I take care of my family - they should take care of theirs.

Happy Fathers Day Calvin! The government will take care of your children. And they will grow up to have 7 kids each, and they will have 7 kids each, etc. Just like rats and the government will take care of them!!!!

they need to add just a little to that jail term. Like working everyday then jail every night until ALL his child support is paid in full. and he better test clean for drugs everyday when he gets back for his nightly lockup. I have to pass a drug test to work, they all should have to pass a drug test for welfare.

That’s OK! President Obama will ensure that each mother and child will not have to worry about paying a mortgage, putting gas in their autos or food on their tables. No, they will not have to worry about it. Obama will tax the working people and spread the wealth around. Cause it’s good for everyone.
