Voters in Nederland will decide the fate of a $120 million school bond on Saturday, May 9, 2009. KBMT 12 News ABC/NBC Brian Burns tells us the "battle of the bond" is coming down to the wire.
"I think we need new schools, I just don't know about the timing" said Johnny Massey, resident of Nederland.
Both sides of the school bond issue in Nederland have been distributing signs as the campaign enters the final hours before this weekends' elections.
"We need new schools but i don't think we need the turf thing" said Donna Sher, another resident of Nederland.
In the proposed bond Hilcrest, Highland, and Helena Park Elementary schools would be torn down, replaced and Langham Elementary would no longer be used.
C.O. Wilson Middle School would also be replaced and Nederland High School would be renovated.
One resident with a vote for the bond sign in his front yard says now is the time, "we need to replace the schools and if we put it off, it will just cost us more in the long run" said Chad Ford.
I'm standing in front of Langham Elementary which would no longer be used by the district and its students reassigned. But school officials say some buildings are too old and too expensive to maintain.
"Our architects say if the maintenance of a building reaches 75 to 85 percent of its rebuilding cost then it's time to build a new one" said Gail Krohn the Superintended of Nederland Independent School District.
But residents say it still may be just asking too much in a tough economy.

Please don't believe the lies about the schools needing replacing. Watch what the first priority will be if the Bond passes. Football stadium...........
