A shooting at Fort Bliss outside El Paso, has the community on the base wondering about their safety. Officials say a civilian man shot and killed his soldier wife, and then turned the gun on himself Saturday, April 4, 2009.
Arleene Barrios has our story.
I went to hand the money to the cashier and the first shot gets fired. It sounded almost like a balloon popping. Everyone completely froze and I looked over and saw a shadow of somebody running in the back of the store.
This military wife has asked to remain anonymous because her husband is a Fort Bliss soldier.
They were shopping in the Fort Bliss PX at about 4p.m. when someone pulled out a gun. Four shots rang out and you hear a thud in the back of the store, you hear a body hit the floor and everyone stares at each other and there's mass panic.
She and customers dropped to the ground before running out and the Military Police went in. the alleged shooter was believed to be the husband of the victim who is a soldier at Fort Bliss.
Fort Bliss officials say the husband showed up surprising her at the PX then gunned her down in the middle of the store, before shooting himself.
The 19-year-old soldier was here for training and lived in the barracks. Her husband, a civilian, lived off post but access wasn't a problem because he's family.
The question now is how did the gun make it on post.
We have a random access program that we conduct random checks to make sure people don't bring in weapons, etc.
If he didn't get stopped for a random check and had a military I.D. card as a family member he probably wouldn't have been caught.
The tragedy has left some questioning the security on post and their safety.
They go to war zone and not scared to go there but when you're scared to go shopping that's a completely different story could have lost their life.
The wife died at a hospital and her husband was listed in critical condition.
Ft. Bliss isn't releasing their names, but say the couple is from Washington state.

I knew the couple. Nice girl but the husband was a loose cannon. Saddens me to know he had to take her life too.

Moral bankruptcy? Please get over yourself. Domestic violence has plagued us for much longer than that, it get's more publicity now. This isn't about America, or guns or even soldiers. It's about one profoundly psychologically damaged individual.

A tragedy of this magnitude shocks and saddens the community as a whole but for the eye witnesses, particularly those close in proximity to the incident, their experience is unimaginable. My hope is that they're surrounded in comforting support and the healing process is swift. I am certain Ft Bliss will provide all necessary resources and services to assure that the comfort and the safety of this shaken community is restored. Peace to all and God bless

Killing someone is wrong. We have tons of laws against it and in many states we kill killers. What we seem to not ask is why did this happen? Maybe we can get passed the gun issue and start asking ourselves why did someone want to kill his wife? I think when we start digging deep, we'll find our moral bankruptcy of the last 30 years it the true causation.
