Port Arthur Students Re-Routed by Fire

Brian Burns

Port Arthur school officials say they'll have students back in class by Monday.

This follows the fire which destroyed the wing of the Memorial 9th grade campus that houses 300 students from Washington Elementary.

The fire also caused extensive smoke and water damage to the 9th grade side.

The 300 or so elementary students will be dispersed through the city at other elementary schools by grade.

On Monday, Washington 3rd graders will go to Travis Elementary...

The 4th graders will go to DeQueen Elementary...

5th graders will go to Tyrrell Elementary...

1st and 2nd graders will go to Wilson at Franklin...

and Pre- K and kindergarteners will go to the Wheatly school.

The elementary students will stay in those schools until the new Washington Elementary is completed in about 18 months.

Restoration crews are working around the clock to make the Memorial campus ready again by next week.

School board trustees met in emergency session Tuesday night to get an update on the fire and approve the student assignment plan.
