Endowment will honor USW’s Jerry Sparks

A presentation of a new scholarship in memory of the late Don “Jerry” Sparks will be made at the United Steel Workers Local 13-423, 1500 Jefferson Drive in Port Arthur at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 8. A key labor leader in Southeast Texas and beyond, Sparks passed away June 1.

The new endowment will enable students who are members of the USW local 13-423 or family members of USW local 13-423 to attend Lamar University.

Members of Sparks family, along with union and university representatives will join donor Walter Umphrey at the presentation.

Individuals will be encouraged to contribute to the endowment in Sparks memory to grow the scholarship.
