After searching for many hours the body of a Vidor teenager recovered from the waters off Lakeview Sandbar in the Neches River.
The drowing victim is identified as 15 year old Jared Edwards of Vidor.
Searchers recovered his body around eight last night.
Edwards and at least four other teenagers were swimming off Lakeview sandbar yesterday afternoon when they got caught in a swift current.
Edwards went under and never re-surfaced.
Two other teenagers were checked out at the hospital and are expected to be physically okay.
Park ranger Mike Hughes and Orange County emergency officer Seth Kaypen recovered the teen's body.
They say the water was not that rough, the teenagers just panicked when trouble arose.

the water may have not been rough but the current was strong. You dont have to have rough waters to have a strong current. my prayers go out the the Edwards family.

Concerned Dad I think you hit the nail on the head. People just need to stay away from the strong Neches river.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Jared’s family. My son is one of his classmates. This is twice that one of my son's friends has drowned at that sand bar. Jon Schlegel back in 03? Everyone needs to tell his or her kids, friends, the Neches River is no place to be swimming! Even the strongest of swimmers would have trouble at this spot in the river, it takes two very sharp turns, it’s deep and has strong currents. Kids were life jackets! Parents strongly tell your kids how dangerous it can be!

MsEvangeline'It is not a resort'More than a spot on the side of the river ! This place is run & maintained by the State of Texas. Texas Park Rangers are in control of here. Has a gated entrance. This spot is created by a deep drop off in the river, producing extream suction (undertow) along with fallen trees that catch your clothing and hold you under .

All my sympathies to the family, I have said many prayers for you. bekk22-"This place needs to be closed down" it is not a resort. It is not a resort it is a spot on the side of the river.Kids & adults will go to these places with the same thought it is going to be a fun minivacation, nothing will go wrong. It is a horrible thing that has happened & I hope it sway others from going down there, or at least make people be VERY aware of the dangers.

This place needs to be closed down~ TOO MANY people drown here. Parents need to keep their children away from such a dangerous place. VERY STRONG currents pull you under panicking or not...
