Child Plays with Matches, House goes Up in Flames

David Ingram

A young child playing with matches is believed to be the cause of a fire that destroyed a home in Orange Friday.

Shortly before 11 a.m. fire crews from the West Orange, Little Cypress, Pinehurst, City of Orange and McLewis fire departments were called to a home in the 2300 block of Western Avenue. The house was fully engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived.

An investigation into the fire revealed it started in a back bedroom.

A McLewis fireman tells KBMT a toddler began playing with matches after his father fell asleep. When the father woke up the mattress was burning so he grabbed the child and left the house.

No injuries were reported.
