AUSTIN — Texas Department of Transportation officials say Hurricane Ike didn't cause any structural damage to the Interstate 45 causeway between Houston and Galveston, but the storm did cause significant damage to the main route across Bolivar Peninsula.

TxDOT spokesman Chris Lippincott said Sunday's aerial review of roadways in the Galveston-Houston area showed efforts to clear debris from state-maintained roadways was nearly complete. He said bridge experts will inspect the causeway to confirm what weight limits it can handle.

Lippincott says large segments of Texas Highway 87 across the Bolivar Peninsula will have to be replaced and repaired.

"The further east our aircraft flew from the ferry landing the greater the damage was," Lippincott said.

Efforts to clear debris from major thoroughfares in the region were nearly complete, but he said they suffered some setbacks as rains moved over the area and caused some roads to flood again after finally becoming passable.

Transportation officials were concerned after heavy traffic inbound to the Houston area on Interstates 10 and 45 and Texas Highway 71 Sunday night.

Lippincott said backups were continuing into the evening and officials were concerned about travelers becoming stranded. He said there were limited fuel supplies on those routes and concern that the traffic could hamper rescue and relief efforts.
