Deedra Wilson, an award winning anchor, is happy to be back in Texas...oil country! Although, she spent her early years living in the San Francisco Bay Area and was born in Camden, Ark...Houston is Deedra's home.
Deedra is a graduate of North Shore Senior High School in Houston. She also attended Texas Southern University.
Deedra's career in broadcast news began 9 years ago at Gospel Radio 1360 AM in Baytown, Texas. She then made a move to News Radio 740 KTRH in Houston as a producer/weekend anchor.
Deedra crossed over from radio to television in Monroe, La. at KTVE Region 10 News as weekend anchor/reporter. From there, she was "up with the chickens" every morning at 2 a.m. bringing the day's news to thousands of viewers in the Ark-La-Tex area at KTAL Newschannel 6 in Shreveport, La.
For a brief stint in Shreveport, Deedra worked for Cumulous radio as an account executive. But, because she loved being in front of the camera more, Deedra packed up and moved to Opryland...Nashville, Tenn. There, she worked at WZTV FOX 17 NEWS as a reporter/fill-in-anchor. Deedra felt right at home because the Tennessee Titans are the former Houston Oilers!
In just eight months, Deedra was offered a job back home in Southeast Texas to solo anchor the 5 p.m. newscast on KBMT Channel 12 in the Golden Triangle...serving Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange.
Deedra loves volunteering, mentoring and speaking to students about life and education.
She attended Texas Southern University in Houston and is the recipient of several awards, including the Outstanding African American Award in Shreveport, La.
Deedra serves on the Board of Directors for the Southeast Texas Press Club...and is up for Board of Directors for the Shorkey Center, an organization for children with autism and disabilities. Deedra is also a member of the Southeast Texas Black Journalists.
If it sounds like broadcast news keeps Deedra busy, you're right..but it's her job as mother, daughter, and friend that takes up most of her time.
